Open the My IP checker. Your current public IPv4 or IPv6 address appears automatically, with no command or installation required.
Before following the device instructions, decide which address you need. Your public IP is visible to websites and belongs to your Internet connection. Your private IP identifies your phone, computer or another device inside your home, office or Wi-Fi network.
Which IP address are you trying to find?
| Your goal | Address needed | Best place to look |
|---|---|---|
| See the address visible to websites | Public IPv4 or IPv6 | My IP homepage |
| Connect to a printer or computer on the same Wi-Fi | Private IPv4 | Network settings on that device |
| Open the router administration page | Default gateway or router address | Connection details on Windows, Mac, phone or router label |
| Check an address that does not belong to your current connection | The known public IP | IP Address Lookup |
| Plan a local network range | IPv4 or IPv6 address and CIDR prefix | IPv4/IPv6 Subnet Calculator |

- Find the router or default gateway address in your device’s network settings.
- Enter that address in a browser while connected to the router.
- Sign in using the router administrator account.

Public IP vs private IP: which one do you need?
Use your public IP when checking what websites see, configuring remote access or identifying your Internet connection. Use a private IP when connecting to a printer, router, computer or another device inside the same local network.
Learn more in our complete public vs private IP guide. You can also enter a different public address in the IP Address Lookup to view its approximate location, ISP and ASN.
How to recognize the address you found
A private IPv4 address commonly begins with 10., falls
between 172.16. and 172.31., or begins with
192.168.. These addresses can be reused on many separate
local networks and are not routed directly across the public Internet.
127.0.0.1is the IPv4 loopback address for the device itself, not its network address.- An address beginning with
169.254.is usually link-local and can indicate that automatic IPv4 configuration failed. - An IPv6 address beginning with
fe80:is link-local and works only on the local network segment. - The default gateway is usually the router's local address; it is not normally the device's own address.
- A MAC address identifies a network interface at the local-link layer and is not an IP address.
A simple test to compare Wi-Fi and mobile data
- While connected to Wi-Fi, open the My IP checker and note whether it displays IPv4, IPv6 or both.
- Turn Wi-Fi off and confirm that the phone is using its mobile-data connection.
- Reload the page and compare the new public address with the first result.
- Turn Wi-Fi back on and reload once more to confirm the original network result.
Different results are expected because the two connections normally use different providers or network gateways. If the public IPv4 stays the same for several subscribers, the provider may be using carrier-grade NAT. A VPN can also replace the visible public address with an address belonging to the VPN service.
Why do I see more than one IP address?
A device can have separate addresses for Wi-Fi, Ethernet, virtual networks and other interfaces. It may also use IPv4 and IPv6 at the same time. Temporary IPv6 addresses can provide additional privacy, so more than one IPv6 address may appear.
Read our IPv4 vs IPv6 guide to understand the two address formats.
Does my IP change between Wi-Fi and mobile data?
Usually, yes. Your Wi-Fi connection uses an address associated with its Internet provider, while mobile data uses the carrier’s network. Switching between them can therefore change the public IPv4 or IPv6 address visible to websites.
What to check when no useful IP appears
- Confirm that the device is connected to the intended Wi-Fi, Ethernet or mobile network.
- Ignore disconnected adapters and virtual interfaces unless you are diagnosing a VPN or virtual machine.
- If Windows shows a
169.254.x.xaddress, reconnect to the network or restart the router before testing again. - If a browser checker does not load, temporarily disable content blocking for the page and retry on another connection.
- If the address changes frequently, repeat the test without a VPN and remember that many providers assign dynamic addresses.
